Unlocking the Secrets to Singapore Math

>> Monday, May 24, 2010

Singapore has been consistent in their top ten ranking at TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study). Their students have mastered a technique which allows them to visualize equations, thus helping them understand Math concepts better and more efficiently. Schools around the world are now implementing this technique, including some of the top schools in the Philippines.

The Galileo Enrichment Learning Program is bringing you a two-day workshop for parents and their grade school children (grades 2 to 5) on Singapore Math entitled, “Unlocking the Secrets to Singapore Math.” This workshop aims to educate the participants with solving strategies used by the Singaporeans.

The workshop will be held on May 28 and 29, from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Powerbooks Greenbelt 4, Makati City. It will be conducted by a mother-and-son tandem, Dr. Queena Lee-Chua and Scott Chua who are both advocates of the Singapore Math. Scott’s school has adopted the technique for years and Scott is a testimony that Singapore Math has helped him understand Math better.

For inquiries and registration, please call the Head Office at 898.1234 or email us at info@galileoenrichment.com. Look for Ms. Novee Bona.

Dr. Queena Lee-Chua and her son Scott are one of the most famous mother-son tandems in the world of education. They have been giving talks in various school events, primarily on the subject of Mathematics. Complex mathematical problems can be solved with simple math logic and their aim is to share this knowledge with their audience.

Dr. Queena Lee-Chua is one of the leading minds in education. A mathematician, writer, and lecturer of Mathematics, Psychology and English at the Ateneo de Manila University, her love for her craft has earned her awards and respect in the field of education. She is a mentor to all her students, garnering her the 2003 Metrobank Outstanding Teacher Award in the Tertiary Level. Her other awards include the Ten Outstanding Young Filipinos in 1997 and one of the Outstanding Young Scientists in 2002. She also won the first prize in the Essay category at the Don Carlos Palanca Awards for Literature.

Her son, Scott Lee Chua is an incoming sixth grader at Xavier School. Having been tutored by his parents at age 1, Scott has won numerous math contests because of his excellence in the subject. He is not only a mathematician like his mother, but also an artist and a writer. He has co-written articles with his mother and a poem for the Filipinos. He is currently working on three travel books for the series “Top 10 Travel Destinations: For Kids and Kids at Heart.” These books, about his visits to Malaysia, New Zealand and Japan, will be out later this year.
