Take me away Doulos and let me lie in books!

Going to Doulos once is never enough for me. I prepped myself to only spend 2 thousand on books when Doulos docked on Philippine shores. I was prepared to keep track of my purchases and told myself not to go overboard.

Kaboom! I didn't. I ended up borrowing money from my mother because every children's book that came into my line of vision went straight to my basket. Teehee. Grabby hands.

back again at m/v doulos

But wait, there's more! If you think I was contented with my first purchase, then you don't know me! After a few days, I badgered my parents to drive us back to the ship for a second round of book-buying. This time, Mom was armed with her credit card because I would be greatly disappointed again if I go beyond my planned expenses.

The second trip was more controlled, because I focused more on my Christmas shopping than my personal wants. Ohhh, early for Christmas? Yes of course, I don't want to cram my Christmas shopping by the end of the year. It means my 13th month pay can be placed to my camera fund. WOOOHOOOO. Aha, aha, I has money-savin' skeeelz yah know.

Imagine this:
A hard-bound book, unabridged version of Peter Pan, complete with illustrations. Guess how much? If you'll imagine it in the shelves of Fully Booked or Power Books, it would be priced at around 1,800. Right, right? I only got the book for PhP 300.

YOUDONBELIBIT? Here's another: The complete works of Lewis Caroll (author of Alice in Wonderland) and complete works of William Shakespeare. One storybook costs around... let's say PhP 295 for a paperback cover. I got the complete works from each other for only PhP 400. 400 for Shakespeare, 400 for Caroll.

Homaygas, you're still shaking your head?

Ah. Hardbound, full color, and oh-so-cuddly-cute illustrations plus new stories of Disney Pixar characters. Disney came up with bedtime stories for kids, and compiled the all-time loved characters from their cartoon collection. Guess how much. PhP 2,500 because it's Disney and the paper is glossy. WROOOONNNGGG! I bought the book for PhP 500.

That's just three of I-don't-know-how-many books. Now I need to save up and pay my mother when her credit card bill arrives. I still owe her 600 pesos in cash for the first trip.

The bonus part of the ship are the young and cute volunteers. Hahaha, they weren't much cute volunteers when they docked here two years ago. Too much eyecandy. I had one-day crushes on three namely-- Ooops, too much information.

If you haven't visited Doulos, you still have till Monday (March 30) to splurge on books. Nothing beats the quality and the cheap prices of Doulos. It feels good to buy books, because you know that the money they get is being put to good use. They visit countries and donate books to children who cannot afford. Buy buying cheap books, you also donate part of your payment to the literary future of the next generation.

I love you Doulos.

MAYGAD ADAM LAMBERT. I just lost my sense of speech. For the lack of a better term, I will use the word "HOT".

I haven't watched the performances yet, so I can't give any judgment yet on his song. I was not at my computer the whole morning (training, bah) which made me miss the morning streaming. It's ok, I'll have the huge hottie view of Adam on my television later.

a lot of boats

While waiting for the 3pm run of Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah last March 7, Jace and I went to Harbor Square to pass time. We left his mom and sister at the stuffed toy stall and took pictures of Manila Bay.

It's funny how the picture came out. Lucky for you, photos do not come with a smelling feature. The picture may suggest smell, but you will never know the real smell of the photo. The water looks so blue, clear and calm. The boats are parked like cars, taking up water area, floating serenely on Manila waters. I joked and asked Jace where he parked his yacht. He quipped, "It's somewhere there."

Soar

One in a while, white birds would swoop down and catch fish with their beaks. I tried to take a photo, but the white fowls were too fast for my finger-shutter reaction. The action would come in the middle of my continuous shots. I only caught one in its pre-meal action.

Not far away, the birds had competition to the fish. Men reeled in their fishing rods and waited for fish to be lured into their trap. If it was lunch for the birds, it was the same for the fishermen. Armed with tweed hats and different kinds of hooks and baits, they braved the afternoon sun and patiently sat on the cemented shores.

For a few hours, we soaked in the sun, had pictures saved in our memory cards, and were ready for an afternoon of laughs.

Archie singing To Be With You at his Idaho concert. I love this version with the violin accompaniment. I think he's doing the keyboards for this song. OH DAVID.

One annoying thing: random screams from the audience. It's supposed to be a very emotional song, but some flailing scream-o fan girls squeals in their undying love "I LOVE YOU DAVIIIIDDD!!" in the middle of the song. I know how much you love the Archuleta, but can you hold off the cheers until he finishes the song? It's ruining the moment.

I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE DAVIDS TO COME TO THE PHILIPPINES. I promise I won't scream my head off in the middle of slow songs. I MAY sing along.

Hello world.
It's 2:07 AM and I'm still awake.
I'm finishing a powerpoint presentation for tomorrow's meeting.
I actually did something at work, but my mind wasn't being creative.
It was crappy and I wasn't satisfied.
So when I went home, I redid the whole thing.
Actually, I'm still doing it.
I'm tired.
But I have to finish this.
I don't want to go to work tomorrow (later?) because I'm exhausted.
I have to go to work because I need to do another powerpoint.
I guess I can cram it on Wednesday?
We'll see.

This is not a poem.

It is 2:09 and I still have two slides to create.

Powerpoint + photoshop + OC-ness = Not good for me stressful health.

picture me this: michael jackson week

>> Thursday, March 12, 2009

Oh to be Alexis Grace.

My two most favorite contestants of this season.

Tia and I are such AI geeks. Last night while waiting for 6 pm (so we could go home and watch the replay of AI), we were talking about AI. This morning, she was the first one I talked to and we talked about... you guessed it right, AI.

The new rules are confusing. The judges have this power to save a contestant from being eliminated. But they have to use it wisely because it can only be used once. If they choose to save someone, the next week would be a double elimination.

I don't know how to do the cut thing here at blogspot, so beware. The following text ARE SPOILERS. Hey I warned you ok. :))

This week is a Michael Jackson Week. There were brilliant performances and some meh. Jasmine's elimination was predictable, because she strained her high notes. She struggled with the song and she tried to hide it with her pretty little face. Jorge's elimination was a so-so prediction. It wasn't a great performance, but it wasn't horrible. The judges didn't bat an eyelash when they announce that they wouldn't save him. :( I'm going to miss the Puerto Rican.

My vote for the best performances are: Adam, Danny, Michael (surprising!) Alexis and Megan.

Lil's performance was predictable. She's good, what's new?
Scott was not a solid performance. It was a good song choice, but some of his high notes were off key.
Allison was great, but she needs to prove herself that she can sing a ballad. She's good at rockin' out a song, but I need to see her in a mellow genre.
Anoop needs to redeem himself. I felt bad for him because he got murdered by the judges' comments. IT WASN'T THAT BAD! It was an ok performance with great energy and schmex appeal.
Kris reminds me of Gilles Simon. HAHAHA I think it's the jawline. He's so darn cute.
I liked Matt's song. I didn't know "Human Nature" was by Michael Jackson. HAHAHAHA

I wonder what the theme will be next week. I'm sure that they'll include a country week. The musical week isn't still sure, because it'll be another advantage for Adam Lambert and his theater background. We'll see.

GO LAMBCHOP!

try to leave the light on

>> Tuesday, March 10, 2009

... sorry. I had to make that David Cook reference. =))

EVEN IN THE DAY LIGHT SHI-INNEE O-OONN!

Whoever hasn't experienced making shadow puppets is not a human. Every child has been fascinated with light, that a mere obstruction of light sparks his imagination. The obstruction that is seen on the wall is called a shadow. Shadows create silhouettes and the mind begins to work. The mind forms images out of the silhouettes and it makes something out of that blackness.

The easiest shadow is the bird. Raise your hand if you don't know how to make a bird shadow puppet. Then use your hand to do a face palm. SHAME ON YOU!!

I played around with shadows last Saturday. I repeat, shadow puppets can be done by anyone of any age. Hold up your two fingers in front of a light. The image that will be formed is a silhouette of a bunny. See it? See it? GOOD. You're making progress.

It was difficult to shoot shadow puppets because I had to multi-task. I used my left to do the shadow-puppetting, while I held the camera with my right. I relied on auto-focus because my hands were full. No more extra hand for manual focus. Besides, I was too lazy to get out my tripod. Hahaha

Guess what this is:

arf!

No it's not an elephant. Elephants don't have pointed ears. And this is an easy one and everyone knows how to do this. Come ooonnnnnn.

The second one, I had to photoshop. I wanted a spider, but of course I couldn't do the eight legs with only one hand. I can't mutate 4 more fingers just for a shadow puppet yah know. I took a photo of one hand, then just flipped the same photo and merged them together.

creepy crawlers

Come to think of it, it doesn't look like a spider anymore. It looks like an old man with 8 strands of hair protruding from his head. AHHAHAHAHAHA

The imagining is up to you.

top 9 + wild card

>> Thursday, March 05, 2009

I did not neglect my fandom for American Idol, it's just that I've only been updating in my Multiply. I'm guessing most of you know already who have made it to the top 9 and who were the judges' picks for the wild card round. I'm disappointed with the choices and the format of this show. It feels so rushed. The contestants are not able to show their potential. It's a one-time-big-time performance and you have to prove yourself in one shot. No chance to redeem yourself unless you've made it to the top 12.

So here are the people whom America voted for:

Group 1: - Predicted 2 out of 3
Michael Sarver. Sang "I Don't Wanna Be" by Gavin DeGraw. Meh. He's ok, but I wasn't expecting him to get a lot of votes to make it to the top 12. When Ryan Seacrest read the results, Michael was standing side by side with Anoop. I thought Anoop would get the vote. Instead, the BBQ guy got the boot and Mr. Oil Rigger got the spot.
Alexis Grace. I love her. She has the spunk. From her first note of "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Loved You)" by Aretha Franklin, I totally said that she'll make it through. She brought class to the song.
Danny Gokey. Everyone knows him as the husband who lost his wife to a terrible sickness. He reminds me of the rock quality of David Cook. He's a great singer and shows great potential of making it far into the competition. But in my opinion, he has to leave his sob story behind. Shout out to friends and family of Danny, do not parade Danny's photo around. Oh he's totally the "Hero" (by Mariah Carey) of singing.

Group 2: - Group 2 was easy to predict because there were only three who were excellent.

Allison Iraheta. Did a great job on "Alone" by Heart. Her voice suited the song and she rocked her way to the top spot. I rooted for her and wanted her to get in. She did!
Kris Allen. Good song choice. He was the adorable "Man in the Mirror" (Michael Jackson). There's something about him that draws you in. He's as adorable as David Archuleta. So humble too.
Adam Lambert. Forgive the bias, but I am head-over-heels with Adam. I don't care that he's gay, or that he has this weird past of being overly flamboyant. I became an instant fan the moment he sang "Bohemian Rhapsody" at the auditions. Some said his rendition of "Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones was shrilly, but for me, he showed his vocal range. He can sing ANY note with ease. I'm so addicted to Adam, I have his pre-idol songs and I downloaded his musical with Val Kilmer -- The Ten Commandments The Musical. :))

Group 3: - Predicted 2 out of 3
Lil' Rounds. Totally pimped. She has a sure image and she knows who she is as an artist. She gives me a LaToya (3rd season) impression, great vocals and great personality. I bobbed my head to her rendition of "Be Without You" by Mary J Blige. I was 100% sure she'd make it.
Scott MacIntyre. It's the first time I've heard of "Mandolin Rain" by Bruce Hornsby. Scott is a better and more confident singer if he's with his piano. He did an ok-job. Didn't go crazy about it, but I was 80% sure that he'd make it. I like Scott because he's fighting his tunnel vision and he's not letting that impairment stop him from doing good.
Jorge Nunez. I went crazy over his performance. When I heard his song choice, my first impression was, Oh no, he's going to sing an Archuleta song. I thought I'd do a comparison between him and Archieboo. When Jorge started singing, I just got lost in the song. It was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. I reaaaaaaaaaaally wanted him in. During the results show, Ryan called him and Junot Joyner to center stage. Junot also did a smooth and great performance on "Hey There Delilah" by The Plain White Ts. As much as I wanted Junot to get in, I badly wanted Jorge more. Jorge's thank you speech in Spanish made me giggle. He deserves it.

Those are your sure 9 contestants. Today's episode also revealed the Wild Card picks. The judges chose 8 singers, based on the potential and sellability of the contestant. I do not agree with some of their choices, because there are more deserving people.

Your Wild Cards:
Vonn Smith. Vonn chose a song that suits him and his personality, but I am totally distracted by his mouth opening. It's too big. :)) Meh.
Jasmine Murray. I've said in my Multiply that she's sellable. I have no qualms over this choice. She's ok.
Megan Corkery. Yay! I like her. She's a ray of sunshine with a unique voice of quality.
Matt Giraud. Mr. Blues on the piano. I hope to see him play the piano again.
Tatiana Del Toro. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. She can sing, yes. But the drama has to stop. I'm scared that she might even make it to the top 12. Oh nooooo.
Jesse Langseth. Honestly, I don't remember what she sang. I wasn't rooting for her to make it to the wild card.
Ricky Braddy. Good choice judges. He's great.
Anoop Desai. I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS GREAT NEWS SINCE THE 1ST WEEK. I am sooooo relieved that the judges picked him. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. OMG YAY!!!!

So there you have it. A quickie recap of the three weeks of live AI action. Tomorrow, the Wild Cards will battle it out for the last time. Make or break performance. I'm still not sure who will vote for the last three slots: America or the judges.

Who I want to complete the top 12:
Matt Giraud/ Ricky Braddy
Megan Corkrey
Anoop Desai. ANOOP DESAI PLEASE. PLEASE!!!!!

Do or Die tomorrow!

I'm so sad Kai, Kendall and Alex didn't make it. :(
