Malabo rin ang tao ano.

Kala mo naman nangangamusta. May mga "uy kamusta ka na?" factor. Sincere at concerned kuno.

christmas chairman

>> Monday, October 27, 2008

Our graphic artist, Edgar was appointed (rather, bullied ahahah) by us to be our Christmas party chairman. During one of our meetings, he presented the themes for our "Secret Santa."

The PD Team helped him in choosing the overall theme. Since it's the Olympic season, we decided to use that as this year's special event. Last year it was 90s. Now, we're going sporty!

I don't know yet who I'll be BECAUSE EDGAR HASN'T GIVEN OUT THE NAMES. (oo, nagpaparinig ako hahaha) The Secret Santa themes are sooo difficult, I have to look for gifts that will not give away my identity. But secretly, I want to get the Spanish Tennis Player. Hahah

I recorded his whole reporting, complete with our comments and teasing. Of course, my voice is the most audible, because I was the one holding the camera.

I can't wait for our Christmas party. We're going to dress up as our chosen athlete. I really want the tennis player so I can dress up as Nadal, complete with wedgie shorts. =))

We are now Tai Chi masteerrsssss! *pumps fist into the air* HOYEAAAAAAAAAAH.

We just finished learning the Chen Style this morning. On Wednesday, we're just going to review the moves, in hopes that we'll memorize all of them when coach leaves for China.

WHATWAITWHAT? Coach is leaving?

Sadly, yes. He and his wife are going back to China. They'll be back, I hope. He promised he'll come back to teach us more styles. October 29 will be our last training day. We'll be having a send-off party for him and his wife after training.

*lip quiver*

Awwwww. We're going to miss him!

Coach allowed us to bring our cameras today. Coach became an instant celebrity. We lined up for photos, took class pictures, and asked him to do Tai Chi poses. Imma give him a copy, PRINTED AND FRAMED. Ahahaha, ohlala.

I'm gonna miss waking up early for Tai Chi. I used to dread waking up so early during Saturdays for training. Oh hello, it's the time to bum around and wake up in the middle of the day! But no, I'm awake like it's a work day, hurrying to get to Crossroad on time. Next Saturday, I'm back to being a weekend bum. Aw shucks, no more Tai Chi.

I gotta keep on doing the routines or else I might forget the movements. Didyaknooow that the Chen Style (video over there. yes up there!) is a martial art? Yes o yes, it can be used for self defense! While we were learning the moves, Coach taught us the practical applications of each step. It may look boooring and slow, but actually, those moves can kill or break your neck. OHSOCOOOOL!

That's Coach John in all his tai chi glory

Oh hai classmates!

Tai chi ain't for the oldies only! It's for all ages and it'll strengthen your legs. When coach comes back (hopefully March), LET'S ENROLL!! Issacoolsport.

want a lollipop?

>> Monday, October 20, 2008

We had another photoshoot last Saturday. It's the first time I took photos of a model because for the past two meetings that I was present, I was the "model." (I had to use the quotation marks because I can't really consider myself as a model. I fail at the height. ahahaha)

Jace brought along his friend and former officemate, Alula, to be our model for the day. Originally, we were supposed to dress up Alula like a doll. She'll be a human doll, with an outfit exactly like a stuffed toy. Buuut, we couldn't find a doll and we would need a seamstress to sew a dress for Alula. So we changed the theme the last minute.

As always :)) We never follow our planned theme. It's always impromptu, but that's the challenge for the make-up artist and the photographers.

The sunlight is the best lighting, but in effect, it melted us to puddles. We had to do a quick shoot or else our model would sweat it out and ruin the make-up.

It was a fun shoot and Alula was very cooperative and very game. Come to think of it, we did stick to one prop: a lollipop.

a lollipop for a beautiful day

Model: Alula dela Cruz
Make up: Ceres Barrios
Photographers: Jihan Estrella, Jason Lim, RJ Condecido and MEEEEEEEEEEEE!

And I think I created a racket here in the office when I shouted, "OH LOOOOORD."

Goodness gracious, Josh Groban. 8->

first and last horrah of west side

>> Monday, October 13, 2008

If only I have all the money in the world, I will watch plays and musicals twice. But of course, each show costs thousands (some tens of thousands. efft) so I really have to save up for good shows. And of course, I always want the good seats.

Now it begins, now we start
One hand, one heart
Even death won't part us now

Just like the wonderful seats I got for West Side Story (second row baby!)
And yay, I watched it twice!

There were two three reasons why I was excited to watch West Side Story:
1. Christian Bautista in a musical
2. Plays from Stages (Trumpets Philippines) are always of excellent quality
3. Christian Bautista (oh did I say Christian Bautista already?)

They didn't disappoint. After watching it twice, I'm still on a hangover. The production should've provided CDs of the musical because I'd definitely buy one. A lot of people were looking for a soundtrack of the West Side production, which means it was worth listening to again and again and again.

We're gonna rock it tonight
We're gonna jazz it up
And have us a ball

Seeing the actors strut their stuff for the final time last night gave me a bittersweet feeling. I understand the hardwork and dedication that each actor has to give every single show. And doing it for the final time will relieve them of the pressure, but at the same time, subtract a routine that they love: performing without cuts.

Seeing Christian doing a flimsy cartwheel made me smile. He deserves the happy gesture, he did a great job as Tony. I like him better as a theater actor, because he is able to exercise his vocal chords. He improved a lot since his Star in a Million days.

I just wish I got two different Marias for the two shows so I could do a comparison. We had Joanna Ampil (lovely, lovely, lovely high notes) as Maria, Rowena Villar (ay! ay! ay! Brava!) as Anita and Jake Macapagal as Bernardo (BernARRRRRdo). I did see Karylle lurking around the lobby while waiting for the 8pm show. She did the 3pm show and I wanted to tell her to do the last show too because I've seen Joanna already. Haha

Tonight, tonight
I'll see my love tonight
And for us stars will stop
Where they are
Today the minutes seem like hours
The hours go so slowly
And still the sky is light
Oh moon
Grow bright
And make this endless day
Endless night, tonight!

I'm giving the play 11 out of 10 stars. Everything is superb: the set, the direction, the choreography, the cast (ANITA RAWKS MAH SAWKS), the lighting, the acting, e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g! There was still an element of surprise even if I watched it the second time around.

My favorite character -- besides Christian (OH HAI) and Rowena -- is Riff. Riff's character was played excellently by Gian Magdangal. That kid's got it all. He can dance, he can sing, he can friggin' act. He was my bet when he was a contestant for Philippine Idol (I voted for him like craaazeeee) and I was soooo glad when I found out that he'll be playing Riff for all shows. He was so funny while singing "Gee, Officer Krumke" with the rest of the Jets.

Oh there's another great singer/actor too! I don't know the actor's name though (TOINNGKKK). He was the one who sang "Cool." A character named Ice was supposed to sing it, but the programme doesn't have an Ice character. hahaha Ah well, whoever you are, you got great vocals!

Breeze it, buzz it
Easy does it
Turn off the juice, boy
Go man, go
But not like a yo-yo school boy
Just play it cool, boy

My musical year is full and happy. There was Cinderella, twice on West Side (OH YEAAAHHHH) and on November... Hairpspray! Gooodmarneeeeng Balteemoooore!

*copies Christian's cartwheel*

and oh, I got tagged by Ashen!

1. Link to the person who tagged you.
2. Post the rules on your blog.

lazy me to tag. :)) All the tagging goes to my multiply.

1. I am addicted to tennis. I don't play tennis, I just love watching and keeping track of the tournaments. Federer will be playing at the Masters Madrid. Nadal is at the other side of the draw. Feddy WILL win it!
2. I love musicals. This entry says it all.
3. Josh Groban is my favorite kulot. (ay duh.)
4. I am wishing for two things: a new camera lens and a raise. HAHAHAHA
5. I'm taking up Tai Chi classes (I know the Yang style already. and we're now learning the Chen 18 style)

racism or reality?

>> Friday, October 10, 2008

There was a report a few days ago about a tv show that presented a Filipino domestic helper acting lowly.

It depicted a bad image of the Filipinos. It gave an impression that domestic helpers are sex slaves or uto-uto in the face of foreigners.

Before everyone should go nuts and demand an apology from BBC, I think we should all step back and look at the whole situation.

Yes, I agree that it was offensive to use a Filipina to bring pleasure to her boss. However, I am 100% sure that there are certain factors that led to this skit.

Majority of the Overseas Filipino Workers are Domestic Helpers. Some of them are even college graduates, with degrees, and with careers different from their current job abroad. The lure of better pay forces them to become maids and clean toilets.

For some of them, it's a choice to abuse the body for extra pay. It's a trait of the Filipino to do anything for a better life back home. I can't confirm this, but I do have a feeling that some OFWs are pimping their own dignity just to add to the money they send back to the Philippines.

I'm not saying that all OFWs are whores and sleazy. There are Filipinos that we can be proud of and who work really hard for the best intentions. But somehow, the bad side of this money temptation is seen by the writers who need material for their shows. This becomes an instant topic for their scripts.

This depiction won't happen if the foreigners don't see this happening around them. Why didn't they pick other unknown country? Why the Philippines? Why us? Why our workers? The more they see this kind of act, the stronger the urge is to write about it.

(This reminds me of the Desperate Housewives episode where they said Filipino doctors can fake their diplomas. Offensive? Oh camon, talk about the famous Recto where you can get instant diplomas without even entering college. Fiction comes from reality. There has to be some experience from reality that gives the writer a basis for his fiction.)

Harry and Paul is a comedy show. Usually, comedians focus on flaws and make it into a laughing matter. For example, SNL actors dress up as presidential candidates and exaggerate all their traits and actions. It's funny, but why aren't Obama and McCain protesting against the show? I haven't watched the real Palin, but Tina Fey as Palin is hilarious when she keeps on diverting the issue to another of her interest. Is Palin complaining? Is Palin asking for a public apology from the show? More or less, it's the same banana as the Harry and Paul show.

I feel bad for the negative image that we present. It'll be doubly difficult for the Filipinos abroad to uplift the Philippines. They need to work thrice as hard to prove that Filipinos are not just sources of jokes. We can be a race of engineers, managers, writers, scientists and artists.

It'll take a lifetime to take back the image portrayed in foreign shows. But it's possible to gain back the dignity. It takes one Filipino at a time, one excellent attitude, one positive influence and one helluva good record at work. We can do better than cleaning toilets.

... to 12 inches of my hair.

I was looking through the 1x1 photos that were gathering dust in my drawer. Some of them dated back to 2nd year high school, the only year that I had my hair cut short. From 3rd year high school, I always had my hair long. The shortest I got was just above the shoulders.

Until now.

I gave myself a dare and went to the hairdresser to have a hair cut. Major hair cut. I put all of my trust (and hair) to Mr. Yani and told him that I wanted a new look.

He enjoyed himself and cut a large chunk of my hair. Goooodbye my lover, goodbye my friend. You have been the one, you have been the one for meeeee. I was glued to the magazine I was reading and wanted to give myself a surprise. I only scrutinized my new look when the Mr. Yani put down the scissors and gave me a mirror.

Oh my god. I just had a haircut.

All 12 inches of my hair was on the floor, no longer a part of me. In a few minutes, it was swept and thrown into the trash can. Booohoo, I will miss you. I can't remember the last time I had a trim. Today was a subtraction.

I feel so light. :)

new kind of vain

>> Tuesday, October 07, 2008

It's been a while since I've been vain about my layout. I wanted something new for my layout and I couldn't find a template that I wanted. The skins from blogskins.com were too many, and many of them were sucky. :P I got tired after clicking a few times at the search engine and picked the simplest and easiest to edit.

So, um. There. Photos are by Jace and Jihan.

The words are from Josh Groban's song from Awake, "So She Dances."

I'm not a dancer. Dance even doesn't like me. Hahaha I needed words to go with the layout and Josh's lyrics was the immediate song that popped into my mind.

A waltz when she walks in the room
She pulls back the hair from her face
She turns to the window to sway in the moonlight
Even her shadow has grace
A waltz for the girl out of reach
She lifts her hands up to the sky
She moves with the music
The song is her lover
The melody's making her cry
So she dances
In and out of the crowd like a glance
This romance is
From afar calling me silently

A waltz for the chance I should take
But how will I know where to start?
She's spinning between constellations and dreams
Her rhythm is my beating heart

So she dances
In and out of the crowd like a glance
This romance is
From afar calling me silently

I can't keep on watching forever
I give up this view just to tell her

When I close my eyes I can see
The spotlights are bright on you and me
We've got the floor
And you're in my arms
How could I ask for more?

So she dances
In and out of the crowd like a glance
This romance is
From afar calling me silently

I can't keep on watching forever
And I'm givin' up this view just to tell her

When singing becomes amazing and funny. They have released a CD and their a capella songa are well sung. Who needs instruments if the vocal chords can imitate them?

The "nose" knows! Hahahahaha

You see in their actions and their vocal excellence that they have the heart in what they're doing. Their voices blend well to sound like one big voice, and at the same time, each of them can stand out to become soloists.

They have done covers of a lot of songs. They're pretty amusing to watch too! Chekemout at their youtube channel.

on duty

>> Sunday, October 05, 2008

My camera lens had its overhaul last week. I sent it to the service center because the autofocus was being a brat. The manual mode on my lens was also stuck. The lens was useless so off to the service center you go!

I was soooo glad when they called home to say that I could pick it up after 5 days. And oh-thank-God for warranties. I didn't have to pay a single centavo for the service and the parts replaced. If my camera wasn't under warranty, I would've paid P4000. Buying authentic gadgets will really save you from spending hard-earned money! OLE!

My lens is as good as new. As soon as I got hold of my camera, I tested it on the way home.

Yep, at night.

One of my favorite shots are light trails. All you have to do is to set your camera to a slow shutter speed and a small aperture. It'll result in fine lines from the lights that shine at night.

My most favorite shot was from the light from a taxi sign.

on duty
3 sec - f/14 - 55 mm - ISO 1600

I wasn't expecting this result. At first I only wanted the light and the word "Taxi" to be visible with the darkness surrounding it. But before the shutter would close, our van started to move. Oh no, no, no.

I was surprised to see a smoky kind of trail. It was beautiful. The taxi sign is still visible. It captured the motion of a vehicle on the move.

Oh love.

My ultimate Christmas wish:

AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED

It's compatible with a Nikon D40. At the Columbia Service Center, this costs P13,000. But at the DP Online store, it only costs P10,000. I can even have it delivered to my office.

I want. Nao.

I'm saving up for this. But I have a feeling that my Christmas shopping will get in the way of buying myself a new addition for Joshua.

Yumi is now accepting donations to the Nikon-Lens-for-Yumi Foundation. (kala mo Mr. Unexpected Visitor, may foundation din ako! HAAHAHA)

Oh all the possibilities at 200mm!

cut the crap

>> Saturday, October 04, 2008

Come one people. Let go of the bonfire issue. I mean, the basketball season is over, the bonfire is over. Ateneo won and there's nothing you can do to take back that trophy.

So cut the crap on La Salle is better and Ateneo has no values blahblahblah.

Remember, no school is perfect. Ateneo has its flaws. La Salle has their share of shame too. (Let me remind you of the record faking that caused a suspension).

Puh-leeeze. Stop the bashing.

I'm not pulling down La Salle. I'm not saying that Ateneo is the better school and people should study there. If you're meant for Ateneo, then go to Ateneo and love it. If you're meant for La Salle then congratulations, that's the place where you'll excel.

I have nothing against La Salle. I have wonderful friends from that school. The rivalry starts when the UAAP basketball season is up. We tease each other on who deserves the championship title. But after all the games, after the medals and after the alma mater songs, the jeering stops. No bashing. No blaming. That's how it should go.

As for the bonfire pictures. WTF, LET IT FRIGGIN' GO. Don't come clean and say "Ateneo is a disgrace and I will never let my kid enroll in that school." Oh puhleeeze. That's just one incident. It has nothing to do with the curriculum, the safety, the campus, and the people who were unaware of the bonfire. If we're going to dwell on one incident, then we should all die. Because even the Philippines is a disgraceful country to live in because we burn effigies of the President.

I'm babbling. I'm just typing along as words come out of my mind. Point is, LET IT GO. Without Ateneo and La Salle, the UAAP thrill will not be alive. Without Ateneo and La Salle, there will not even be a huge mass of school spirit. Without those two teams, Araneta won't even be raking in money with the huge amount of sales during games. The phrase "blue vs. green" wouldn't be so thrilling if it weren't for those two teams. I'm happy to be part of this family that celebrates school spirit. But please, for both camps. Don't go overboard.

Enough of this crap. I'm done with the bonfire. This will be the last time I'll talk about this crappy issue. If I will talk about the bonfire, it'll be about the mud and the friends who were with me.

three marks: I love you

Three marks: I love you.
1/60 - f/4.5 - 30 mm - ISO 400

So, how was your muddy experience?

>> Wednesday, October 01, 2008

One thing common about the people who went to the bonfire yesterday: muddy shoes.

The rain poured around 4 pm, causing a massive slosh pit at the Bellarmine field. So when people started to come, the grounds weren't dry yet. I pity those people who wore flats or open toed shoes. I'm sure today, everyone is cleaning their shoes. I just finished picking out the mud on mine. haha I, too, was supposed to wear a peep-toe pair but I anticipated the rain that morning. So much for planned skirts, I changed into my pants and my boots.

Ailen and I left the office around 620 and survived the MRT ride. We didn't take the trike anymore to Ateneo because traffic was B-A-D.

Everyone was walking towards the bonfire. While we were nearing the field, the cellphone signal started to get jammed. I tried calling Martha and Trish, but all I got were busy signals. Everyone was trying to look for their friends in that sea of blue. Lucky you if you were able to get through the busy lines.

I first found Martha who was stuck at the Bel waiting shed with her parents and brother. We were screaming like mad, because FINALLY I saw her. I bumped into Cams who was also looking for people. Angge joined us a few minutes after. Then Kooks came (and left hahha). Then that was it. Lost series again. Angge and I tried to go around and ended up staying in the middle of the street to cheer for the Senior Team who went up the stage.

We tried our luck to buy a drink (my boot got stuck in the mud. HAHAHAH). Angge went home minutes before ten. I saw Vit.

I saw Chikai coming out of the Bel field. HORAAAH! She survived the slosh pit!

Then the wonderful fireworks.

It was the greatest thing of that night. I got out my phone and took a video of it. SOMEONE (hahaha you know who you are) shouted "Go LaSalle!" during the video.

Here comes the frustration.

1. I FORGOT TO SAVE THE VIDEO. In my excitement and awe of the fireworks, I pressed escape rather than save. AW DAMMIT. I hate myself for that. :))
2. Trish was just a few steps away from me during the fireworks. AND I didn't see her. AT ALL.

I left the venue after the fireworks, leaving Chikai alone to look for Martha. Awwww. I'm sorry dearie, but I reallly had to go. heehehe

I told Mom and Dad not to enter Ateneo anymore to fetch me because the traffic was terrible. It would be useless to take a u-turn to Ateneo. The road was a parking lot already. I walked from Bel and crossed the overpass. We took the side streets from Xavierville and exited at QC circle. Thank God for side streets to escape traffic.

Overall, it was a great experience. I guess if it weren't for the rain, the mud and the bad signal, I would've enjoyed it more. As I said before, I didn't go for the bonfire. I went to be with wonderful friends who were present to share the experience of being one.

To the other friends who I knew who were present (Tia, Marga, Chino, Deng, Cathy, Reamur, Janess, and whoever else) we'll see each other next time. Somewhere less crowded, right? :))

And to the people I saw, HORRAAAAAYYYYYYY!!!!!!! ZOMG.

To TRISH VELEZ (oo, special mention ka). whythehelldidn'tiseeyou?? I thought Kirk was the one at number 15. So instead of seeing you, I saw Chikai. =)) So near yet so far! Aw dammit. Next time... again? Sayang! Ms. South visiting the North! awww maaaan.

Lastly, to the unexpected visitor. It was great seeing you... in blue. HAHAHAHAHAH But really, thanks for coming, even if it was just for a short period of time. I do hope the traffic was all worth it. I think that my phone was doing a favor for me when I forgot to save the video. The "Go LaSalle" wasn't meant to be saved. hahahahaha jooooooooooooke. So, till next curfew? :)) Ah, next Ateneo bonfire. NEXT YEAR. OLE!
