i*Tech [ay tek] n. 1. regi oppus 2. someone who loves to tinker with computers and who is literate with computer softwares and anti-spywares.

2.australian open

they concluded the australian open yesterday.

serena williams (winning over maria sharapova: 6-1, 6-2) and rodger federer (defeating fernando gonzales, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4) were hailed the champions.

why do winners roll on the floor like dogs when they win a game? i just found that gesture amusing. :)

the more lengthy post about this is in my lj.

three places. four sets of characters. one common factor.

aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhwwwwhohooooooooooorrrrrraaaarrrggghhhhh!!!! ANG GANDA-GANDA NG BABEL. NAKAKALOKA YUNG STORY. RAAAAHHHHHH... PANALOOO ITO!!

moving on.

everything starts with a peaceful plot, a honeymoon, a wedding, a transaction, a game. no one knows that their small acts of love and thanks could make a dramatic change in their lives. suddenly, the other becomes an enemy, a lover, a friend.

the director's style of the time frame is amazing. you think everything is in linear form, meaning, the scenes are done one after the other. the way the director makes his storyboard will piece the story together at the end.

i like cate blanchet more when she's not in elven wear. hehe. she looks more elvish in human. her silence speaks volumes. brad pitt's look was a tired husband, but he would do anything for his wife and children.

i noticed that filipino culture is not very different from mexicans. mexicans love fun and parties. filipinos would get out a bench, a couple of beers, a videoke, and they'll laugh the night away. mexicans would celebrate a wedding with the whole town. filipinos would travel and celebrate in bulk. some mexicans would work as domestic helpers, filipinos are scattered all over the world as super yayos and super yayas.

"they look at us as if we were monsters."

it's more of a wake-up call. everything that goes wrong seems that someone is attacking them directly. one gun shot, it's a terrorist attack. a different race in your car, you're a kidnapper. a girl goes naked, she's seducing you. police knock on the door, they're there to arrest someone.

we have to know that some actions have intentions. and sometimes those intentions don't match the consequences. we always suffer and react from the consequences, not the intentions. that's the sad nature of humans, and we can't do anything about it.

director's notes. POSSIBLE SPOILERS

taken from: cannes film festival website

Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu on the title of the film: "Babel, we think about man building this tower and trying to arrive to the sky and be gods. And then God got angry and he created these different languages. And that's the reason we are talking so many languages all over the world. For me that's not the problem, I think that language can be very easy to break. For me, I think the problem is the ideas and preconceptions that we have that really keep us apart. That's what the film's about. And at the same time, I want this film to be basically about what separates us and what brings us together. I think that's the key element: What makes us the same people living in the world and not what are our differences. Which ones are the similarities and I hope this film communicates that."

Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu on the film's message: "I don't know if it's an x-ray of the world because that's too ambitious, but I tried to show what is going on with us at the moment. We see the “other” as always abstract, so that to be different means to be dangerous and not able to understand the other. This is happening not only country between country, but against fathers, against sons, against husband... We are not able to listen anymore. I want to talk about that, the borders within our souls: our preconceptions of our fathers, the archetypes we have from religions, races, cultures. I tried to make a film that talks about prejudice without being prejudice."

Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu on coincidences in life: "I feel that the connection that I want to make is not a physical or coincidental connection, nor a plot connection. What I try to do in this film, I think as human beings, what makes us happy is very different, depends on cultures or races. What makes us sad and miserable is exactly what we share and that thing is basically the impossibility of love, the impossibility to be touched by love, the impossibility to touch with love and express it. That is one of the most painful things that every human being has experienced, as well as feeling vulnerable to love. I think those two things are the most tragic things that bring us together. This film and the connections to the characters is about that, all of them on different levels, no matter which culture, no matter which country, religion, age, social class... All of these people are at an inability to express themselves, with their husbands, with their wives, with their kids. When you cannot be touched by words, and when you cannot touch people with words, then the body becomes a weapon, an invitation and that is what is tremendous about the story. I feel that you saw a film about human beings and not about Moroccans, Mexicans or Americans."

Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu on the USA: "In this film I don't want good or bad guys. I think what is happening in the world is perpetuated. I try to be subtle in a way, to not be archetypal, and not prejudice. When I think about an Empire, it's not about nations, human beings, others. It's the way they normally try to pretend that everyone is a terrorist, anything can be held against you. I think there is now an obsessive idea, obsessive problem with the United States, showing its power. This is a very stressful moment in history."

watch babel. this movie has to win awards at the oscars. promise. it's a good watch. :)

So, say you were meeting a new person--blind date, new friend, who knows. And you wanted them to have some idea of what kind of person you are, and who you are. But you can't actually tell them in so many words. Instead, you have to give them a box, with a dozen things in it for them to look at/read/listen to/taste/whatever. "What would you put in the box? And a copy of your journal or a link to your LJ would be the same thing as just telling them directly, yourself, so that's not allowed.

1. cds of josh groban
2. a dvd (note: not dibidi) of csi: new york
3. a box of children's books

tomorrow: it's clijsters vs sharapova (talo si hingis. booo)

>> Wednesday, January 24, 2007

1. sharapova def. chakvetadze
7-6 (7-5), 7-5

it was a long match, with a 31-hit rally maximum per point. both russians gave their all in order to with the quarterfinals and move on to the finals. but at the end, it was maria sharapova who will advance, one game closer to winning the australian cup.

most of their points relied on unforced errors of the opposing team, meaning they scored points on numerous errors of the other team. sharapova suffered from 41 errors, while chakvetadze had 28.

sharapova admitted that it was a difficult game, going against a fellow russian. sharapova only got the groove when chakvetadze had a minor sprain on her ankle. it was an advantage for sharapova to boost her confidence. maybe it was also the weather -- they were playing under the sun, 12 noon melbourne time.

every score was breath-taking. just listening to the ball hitting the racket, the frustrated grunts of the players, and the updates of the announcers were enough to keep me alerted on the edge of my seat. imagine the tension if you're watching it live. i danced in my seat every time sharapova added a point to the scoreboard.

after over an hour and forty minutes, the crowd cheered for sharapova. yey!

2. clijsters def. hingis
3-6, 6-4, 6-3

damn. i wanted hingis to win.

it was a tough game for both players. one match score had over 5 advantages and deuces. there was nothing that could stop both of them.

clijsters won over hingis' errors. the last point came from hingis' double fault. giving clijsters a step nearer the australian cup. even if she had 62 unforced errors, she still emerged victorious against hingis, who only had 20 errors.

it was the double fault that provided clijster's win.

ow well. so clijsters will have a game with sharapova tomorrow.

i'll whole-heartedly cheer for sharapova. even if clijsters is good, i'd still go for sharapova.

3. photos

i was looking through the photo gallery of the australian open and i noticed some pictures.

check out tommy haas. playing without a shirt! now that's what i call fashion.

lookit the abs! whohoo. parang katawan ni "the thing" sa fantastic 4.

gagaya din raw si andy roddick.

kahit pawis-pawis, tablado ng loop earrings ni serena willams ang laro. pasok siya sa finals.

who says tennis players aren't gymnasts? kim clijsters.

i love the subtitle on this pic, "martina hingis is so good, she can play with her eyes closed."

>> Tuesday, January 23, 2007

i promised regi that i'll make a post today.

but what to post? what to post?

*put on the kumon thinking face*
(yumi calls it the i-don't-want-to-do-the-kumon-repetitive-worksheets-anymore face. hehe >:D )

i'll post in random.

1. tennis
there are so many players at the australian open. i only know four, three of which are famous already. clijsters was added to my list because she advanced to the quarter finals, along with hingis, williams and sharapova.

i don't know who to cheer when finals come. i want them all to win.

i'm not following the men's games, so i'm not familiar with them. hehe

the website is so cool, they have a live radio feed of the game. it's as close as watching it live. there's also a page where you can watch the game, except that the image you see is only the exchange of the ball from one court to another. you won't see the movement of the players, but at least you know where the ball is heading. it also calculates the speed of the ball. there's also an update scoreboard that runs on flash. with their site, you can actually follow the game without going to australia.

rpm 9 shows the games everyday, 6 pm. they have live feeds during sundays. i'm just not sure what time they show the live games.

2. work

i have to stop being lazy starting..... um... fine, this moment. i have to finish book one of grade 6 english worksheets by the end of the month. that's 500 pages. i have finished 200 pages. i can actually do twenty a day, but that's mediocre work. dang. i have 300 more to go in less than two weeks. oh no. better start working now.

3. moolah

nada. zilch. exhausted.

i really have to withdraw money tonight. my wallet screams for mercy as it holds seven pesos. freaking seven pesos. good thing mrt has these stored value cards and i won't need to worry about going home for tonight. i have one trip going home.

need. money. now.

4. wars

mel sent me this link on the new kind of earth wars. click on this link and find out what i'm talking about.

bang! bang! wonnggg wonngggg.

no. it doesn't have star wars.

5. ships and books

doulos is on it's way now to cebu. i've spent my salary on buying the books on board and there's no small space in my library to fit the books i bought. i am still in shock whenever i see the amount i've spent but i don't mind. books are a great investment and it'll never go out of the latest trend. doulos, come back please.. i want more books. ehehehe.

6. valentine's day

for the theater lovers and lovers out there. sinta is going to be staged on valentine's day. it'll be at teatro pagsanghan, ateneo high school. maita will be playing sinta. come! let's watch the play! i've seen it thrice already and i won't grow tired of watching this romantic play. it's a mix of comedy, drama, romance and a spark of musical talent.

sige na! tara! nood tayo!

i have this sports crush on maria sharapova.

i was watching her match against tathiana garbin yesterday at the australian open. both courts showed strength and endurance during the game, and both courts wanted to move on to the next match. however, maria emerged victorious as she gained points on tathiana's errors. most of the latter's errors were blamed on balls bouncing on the outside lines and the boundaries of the single's court. maria won on a score of 6-3, 6-1.

tennis players have this tendency to have large upper bodies, because most of the body movement is focused on the arms and the shoulders. sometimes, players only have one arm bigger than the other, depending on the racket hand (something similar to the wand hand in harry potter. mwehehe) maria still kept an image that wouldn't make her look boyish, even if she had a large and muscular shoulder length.

i found it amusing to see a sporty look on sharapova, while keeping a woman-ish image. after the match, when the players packed their tennis stuff, i noticed a difference between garbin and sharapova. sharapova stuffed her tennis racket, her water bottles, and towels in her white tennis bag. sharapova, on the other hand, got out her pink tennis bag, placed her racket and water bottles inside and reached for her other bag. the other bag was a girly bag, maybe containing her personal belongings. she even wore a white jacket with frills on the neckline after the game. garbin didn't wear any jacket after the game. she just left the court with a flushed face.

maybe it is her number one ranking in russia that makes her have the privilege of wearing nike apparel. garbin is ranked thirty in italy, a long way (and a lot of matches) to be ranked number one. sharapova has endorsed a lot of brands, including the camera brand, canon. (remember her commercial where she was hitting balls against a fence. the camera pans towards the other court, and we see her name spelled out by the tennis balls.) i've seen her endorse bikini wear and she doesn't look anything close to a sports person.

and for a person coming from russia, she speaks good english. she's a year younger than me, yet her name rings a bell in the sports world. her tennis value reaches to $8 million, after winning over a hundred matches around the world.

sharapova moves on to the semi-finals. she's two matches close to winning the australian cup and my dad and i would be monitoring the progress of the players.

it's the season for the young players: hingis, williams, sharapova, chan. move over, monica seles and steffi graf, these girls ready to take over the court.

because i had a great night last night with the FA Fest, i decided to be all girly-girly today.

i donned on a skirt and butterfly-designed white shoes to work.

i did my usual morning routine: breakfast, bring a book (a borrowed 'eldest' from jace), ride the mrt to work.

normal day.

naaah. ironic morning.

i got a good spot in the mrt, somewhere in the middle of the first coach, right below the aircon. i held the book in one hand, and held the straps with the other. i felt so light because of the skirt that i didn't notice the train malfunctioning per station.

then i got a text from my grade school friend, migs.

"good morning! hope you have a nice day!"

i was supposed to reply with, "mukhang masaya ka ngayon ah!" when the train completely stopped and the lights went off. the loud speakers went on saying, "labas po tayo. pasensya na po, may diperensya po yung tren. hintayin nalang po natin yung susunod na tren. pasensya na po."

the train was filled with exasperated sighs. everyone was going to work and they were running late, then this train breaks down in the middle of ortigas. good thing the train was able to make it to shaw. THANK GOD WE DIDN'T WALK ON THE TRACKS.

i kept my cool. i didn't want the incident to ruin my skirty-skirty day.

the shaw platform was filled with people. people holding cellphones -- either texting their boss that they'll be late, or texting someone to pick them up from this unexpected morning -- stared the big digital clock tick it's way to eight o'clock; everyone wanted to ride the train. immediately.

but everyone (or at least those who rides the mrt regularly) knows that shaw station is a big no-no to accommodate a lot of people. everyone knows that by cubao, the train is jumpacked with sardines from the ocean. adding more pushy tuna in the train will sink the boat. (the boat is sinking, group yourselves into..... 5000!!)

i put on my music and called my boss to tell her that i'll most probably be late. i read a few chapters from the book until i was squished left and right from the girls who pushed their way towards the mrt doors.

i don't know. the morning was just so irritating, but i didn't crumple my forehead in annoyance. it's the magic of the skirt. amen. maybe it's the josh groban in my ears and the book in my hand, i smiled when people made a mini stampede in front of the doors. everything can't be perfect everyday.

after ten trains that passed by, i was pushed inside a train. finally. i didn't move a foot muscle when i entered the train. i went with the flow. literally. i tried to push back because i had to make way to those who'll get down in shaw. the magic of the skirt. i felt so light.

i arrived 8:17, two minutes late from the grace period. it doesn't matter anymore, i survived an ironic morning. i guess migs was right, it was a good morning after all.

i shall treat myself with a cup of starbucks. :D yey!

the magic of the girly-girly skirty-skirty.

listening to the forbidden questions has been a habit for us here in the office. today's episode was so interesting and luis alandy gave the most honest answers.

it's not just any other kind of kiss, it was a torrid hot kiss. everyone in the dj's booth was screaming and had their cameras and phones out to take a video of it. i'm gonna wait for those videos to be uploaded on youtube. i can imagine the shock on everyone's face when luis didn't hesitate to kiss the gay dj. haha wonderful.

the questions and answers of luis alandy may be found here. just click the link.

i'm glad he was the one who broke up with roxanne barcelo. i know, she's my schoolmate in high school.. but yeah, i'd side with luis in the break-up.

The Five Love Languages

My primary love languages are probably
Physical Touch and Quality Time.

Complete set of results

Physical Touch: 8
Quality Time: 8
Acts of Service: 7
Words of Affirmation: 4
Receiving Gifts: 3

Unhappiness in relationships, according to Dr. Gary Chapman, is often due to the fact that we speak different love languages. Sometimes we don't understand our partner's requirements, or even our own. We all have a "love tank" that needs to be filled in order for us to express love to others, but there are different means by which our tank can be filled, and there are different ways that we can express love to others.

Take the quiz

bringing yumi to a (floating) bookstore (e.g. m/v doulos) is bad for her health.

i was one of the few who lined up an hour before the boat opened its dock doors to visitors. with a 10-peso ticket in hand, i excitedly climbed up the stairs to the famous floating bookstore, m/v doulos.

i didn't care about the heat. money in my bag, shopping basket in my hand, i feasted my eyes on the books.

a few feet from the entrance, my basket was full already. i couldn't take another step because i was holding too many books. i had to let go of some books (noooo!!!) to give way to my budget. everything was cheap. there's this book that costs around 700 pesos in national book store. i saw a copy on deck and it was priced at 150. as a greedy book collector, i grabbed everything my eyes saw.

i said i'm gonna buy books for christmas gifts. i only bought two books to give away. the selfish yumi book collector was all over the scene.

we checked out the books, bought ice cream, and looked at the bill. we spent over 8 thousand pesos for books. whaaattt?? i wasn't even half done! they'll be staying till the 22nd so i'm gonna spend my next salary money on buying more books, even if it means going broke and sacrificing my starbucks diet.

my wallet is screaming "no more", but yumi will go back there no matter what!!!

1 thou will bring you happiness.
2 thou will bring you bliss
3 thou will bring you ecstacy
4 thousand will bring you insanity
5 thousand will make you break into an 'addict sweat'
6 thousand will propel you to kill for books
7 thousand will force you to become a TNT on that boat
8 thousand will call security to drag you off the boat
no matter how much you spend, you will never reach heaven unless you work there or buy the whole ship!

you book lovers really have to visit. do or die. oh yeah, arm yourselves with a fat wallet.

i will post pics in my multiply as soon as my internet connection is nice to me.

national proposal

>> Wednesday, January 03, 2007

the elections are coming on may. do we know who to choose?

i really fear for our country. actors and actresses are running for the government posts and they are likely to win because their faces are plastered on our tv sets. but are they really worth our votes? is the phrase 'i want to help in the development of our country' enough to save us from poverty?

the minimum requirements for candidacy are:
1. must be a natural-born filipino citizen
2. can read and write
4. 40 years old and above

that's it. it means anyone can run for government posts. how are we going to focus on development and excellence if our leaders can only read and write? comprehension is not even part of the requirements. a janitor needs at least a high school diploma to be employed. sweeping floors need a high school diploma. but to be a president, you can just at least know your abc's.

sad, isn't it?

therefore, i formulate a proposal for citizens who would want to run.

1. the candidates should file an essay of intent. it may be in english or in any dialect.
2. the candidates should at least know the basic rules of the constitution. (thinking of it again, they should know the constitution.) meaning, they must take a test on the constitution. it's time to put those writing and reading skills to test. besides, they would deal with the constitution when they get that coveted seat in the government.
3. they must submit a list of projects they would focus and prioritize
4. they must go through a series of comprehension essays about possible issues that they would face as a public official
5. they must have a mission and vision for the country

platforms are not enough. the platforms are general (e.g. help the poor, eradicate poverty, etc) the candidates must learn that the masses aren't the only people in the country. the employed are the ones paying the taxes, and the taxes are the source of their salaries. they must not give their full attention in giving what the masses need. i'm not saying that they should neglect the poor, but they should not devote their attention in pleasing the poor.

elections are near. i hope that someday in the future (soon) we would have really competent candidates that we would be proud of. we need more rizal-like attitudes and less of the bonifacio-attitude. we should learn that rallies are not worth the fight.

math is emo

>> Monday, January 01, 2007

Math tells us three of the saddest love stories:

1. Tangent lines who had one chance to meet and then parted forever.

2. Parallel lines who [are going the same direction but] were never meant to meet. (italics mine.)

3. And asymptotes who can get closer and closer but will never be together.

ayan, i provided visual aids to those who need to refresh their memory on mathematical terms. :P

enough of the emo-ness.
